about

I’ve had this song for a long time. I recorded it during the Miles We Put Behind sessions, but we didn’t really hit it, so it didn’t make the cut. I’m glad I hung on to it for this record; I think the song got the production treatment it needed. It’s a scan of the boom or bust history of Alberta since the settlers arrived and a bit of a dig at Alberta’s tendency to push the “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” narrative.

lyrics

Lyrics to Solid Ground:

Some nights when I strum this guitar I think of the ones before,
Trudging across the barren plains, frozen to the core
Welcome to the wild west, where a man can make his way
Sold ‘em all on paradise and crops they would raise
But it was boom or bust, grain or dust, gone with a cold north wind
By the time you get here boys, you’ll forget where you’ve been

Just hanging on, to another wild ride
Wild horses, kicking holes up in the sky
We hope and pray this rodeo doesn’t take us down
Keep your head on straight and land your boots on solid ground

These days we’re higher than the Rockies, lower than the depths of hell
Feel like we’re drawing water from an empty well
And it’s boom or bust, oil or rust, fire in the sky
Fortunes gained are fortunes lost in the blinking of an eye

Just hanging on, to another wild ride
Wild horses, kicking holes up in the sky
We hope and pray this rodeo doesn’t take us down
Keep your head on straight and land your boots on solid ground

I put my guitar back in its case as the sun begins to rise
Wondering how much has really changed in the time that’s passed us by
It’s still boom or bust, hope and trust that we’ll make it through somehow
And no telling where we’re heading on this road that we’re on now

Just hanging on, to another wild ride
Wild horses, kicking holes up in the sky
We hope and pray this rodeo doesn’t take us down
Keep your head on straight and land your boots on solid ground
