about

This tune was co-written with John Wort Hannam during a short writing retreat at the Coutts Centre in Nanton Alberta. I had the verses scratched out and read them aloud as I was going through my journal looking for something we could dig into. John stopped me as soon as he heard them and said, “What’s that? That’s a song man!”

I had written it thinking about a friend of mine and his relationship with his dad, but I think it resonated a lot with John and his relationship with his dad. John came up with the chorus.

lyrics

Lyrics to Father's Child

He had a mouth just like a sailor
And a poet all the same
He could talk his way out of anything
Then start the whole damn fight again
He would show me the good book
Then contradict each verse
With his Friday night behaviour
On a Sunday after church

And it all comes clear
When the smoke disappears
Sometimes things in the mirror
Are closer than they appear

He could hold a room in stitches
Wrap ‘em round his finger one by one
When his light would shine upon you
It felt brighter than the sun
He would come and go just like the wind
Said he did the best he could
When I’d tell him that he let me down
He said that I misunderstood

And it all comes clear
When the smoke disappears
Sometimes things in the mirror
Are closer than they appear

And I’m always finding trouble
I’m always running wild
My mother did her best
But I am my father’s child

And it all comes clear
When the smoke disappears
Sometimes things in the mirror
Are closer than they appear
Closer than they appear

T. Buckley Calgary, Alberta

T. Buckley stands quietly among a disappearing ilk of true craftsmen. His soul and voice are unmistakably genuine alongside his Western roots resulting in a class of songsmith long revered and scarcely achieved.
